This was our first time testing out the new selections, and we were eager to see how they compared. While there were plenty of options to choose from, none of them wowed us. We still stand by our claim that newer Carnival ships feature the best casual quick service spots. The staff onboard was excellent, the ship was in great condition, and the entertainment was superb. My friend and I had lots of fun together during our spring break cruise on Harmony of the Seas. I noticed that there is now a new pool and bar area right as you get off the ship. My friend had woken up early to get ready for her excursion in Costa Maya when she heard the ship announcement.

Other cruise staples like dance classes, art auctions, arts and crafts, karaoke, and some upcharge sessions occurred regularly throughout the week as well. Throughout the day and early evening, there were plenty of trivia sessions. We rocked it at the 90’s Name that Tune session to win coveted Royal Caribbean pens. In comparison to the sisterships Allure and Oasis, Harmony OTS is heavier by 1700+ tons, 3+ meters wider, and able to accommodate 100 more passengers. American Harmony doesn't cater to families with children specifically, and no special areas for kids or teenagers are available onboard. A handful of children might be seen on summer or holiday sailings but, by-and-large, this is a cruise experience geared towards mature adults. Additionally, our balcony offered plenty of space for the two chairs and small table. Unfortunately, Royal Caribbean has reduced service for most cabin categories to once daily. This venue features a well-balanced Jalapeno-Cucumber Margarita, which I enjoyed especially during the Cinco de Mayo Weekend. We were fond of Luca in the Boot and Bonnet pub playing classic acoustic music. Justin in the Schooner Bar was a lively piano player as well, mixing in humor and even some beat boxing for an entertaining time. There was also the house band, A-Groove Band, in Dazzles and the Latin Heat in Boleros for those wanting to dance.

On the first night of the cruise, I utilized my Diamond Plus BOGO offer which allowed me to purchase one specialty restaurant dinner and receive complimentary dining for a second guest. This offer can only be used on the first or second night of the cruise, so my friend and I decided to start the cruise off right with dinner at Jamie’s Italian. Two Sun Decks (Lower on Deck 5-aft, and Upper on Deck 6) are fitted with sunbathing and shaded seating areas, putting green, deck-game area (shuffleboard). The Upper Sun Deck (top-deck) is furnished with comfortable deckchairs and has 3 shaded seating areas plus one SkyLight (glass-roof cover). Also added to Harmony is the modern Mexican restaurant Sabor, recently added to Allure and Freedom of the Seas. Harmony of the Seas features a multi-deck water slide area that is a first for Royal Caribbean. It is also the first Oasis-class ship with robot bartenders serving drinks in the Bionic Bar, a concept that debuted in 2014 on Quantum of the Seas. Harmony has bigger cabins than Allure and Oasis in some categories, and windowless interior cabins outfitted with Virtual Balconies, offering a real-time view of the outdoors (first debuted in 2014 on Navigator of the Seas). Particularly noteworthy are the two Grand Suites that measure 900 square feet apiece and include balconies that wrap around the stern of the ship, offering 270-degree views of the Mississippi River. These suites also boast separate living and sleeping areas with floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

In our experience, guests eat most of their meals at the Windjammer Marketplace, main dining room, Park Cafe or Mini Bites. These four complimentary restaurants provide meals throughout the day and offer a good variety of food. A complimentary restaurant is included with your cruise fare and you pay nothing extra to eat there. You may enjoy as much food as you like from these locations, and no limit on how many times you can visit.
There is a lot to see and do on Harmony of the Seas, and walking around the ship will quickly provide a good understanding of where things are relative to each other, plus there is a lot of great things to discover. Art, activities, live music, decor and more are found in all the neighborhoods. Fun fact is that this RCI ship has a namesake - the 2011-launched "COSCO Harmony".
The Main Lounge is located all the way forward overlooking the ship's bow, while a secondary lounge (known as the Sky Lounge) is situated one deck up, all the way at the rear of the ship. American Harmony has two comfortable lounges where lectures, presentations and onboard entertainment are delivered daily. With another Oasis Class cruise in a few months, we look forward to more Royal Caribbean mega-ship cruising.
The ramp has an innovative design being constructed as a retractable gangway (passenger bridge). The technology is often implemented on some of the largest ferries and features an opening bow door. While the casual dining on Royal Caribbean does lack a bit, the main dining room and specialty restaurants exceeded our expectations. From the service, to the food preparation, taste, and presentation, this was some of the best dining we have had since the restart. That is really saying something for a ship that holds over 5,000 passengers.
