Interior Design Project Captain
While the home's original architect is unknown, there are rumours it was designed by Lutah Maria Riggs – the first female architect in California to be named a fellow of the AIA. In the 1950s, Riggs designed a nearby temple for the Vendanta Society, which drew many bohemians to the area. Plush sofas and cushions beckoned leisure, while woven textures, like beachside breezes, contributed tactile warmth. The true magic lay in the seamless synergy achieved—a space where boundaries between indoors and outdoors vanished.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER II
The landscape, hardscape, site walls, pool and existing natural elements join together with the fully furnished home to create a comprehensive design experience. A project which respects the site to the highest level and creates a sense of place and serenity. A modern response weaved into the natural landscape of native oaks and ancient sandstone boulders.

Clay Aurell is the “ultimate strategist,” a placemaker who combines the skills of an architect, developer, planning consultant, real estate professional, and politician to formulate the creative vision for AB design studio’s projects. From boutique hotels and wineries to LEED-certified museums and mixed-use developments, each of Clay’s structures are inspired by a distinct contextual awareness that supports community with the future in mind. Our Santa Barbara and Los Angeles studios are always seeking new team members in a variety of studio roles. We are currently hiring entry level and experienced Architects, Designers & Interior Designers in both our Santa Barbara and Los Angeles Studios. We thrive on multi-disciplinary design with a focus on creativity and signature solutions for each client and project. Founding Partners, Josh Blumer and Clay Aurell are the founders and Source of AB design studio’s Collaborative, Creative and Accountable design, and project delivery process. Along with the other Principals in the Studio, Clay Aurell, and Josh Blumer lead the Design and Project Delivery Process. Clay, Josh, and the other Principles source each other, our clients, consultants, vendors, and studio staff by Collaborating, Creating, and holding a high degree of Accountability in the space of our work and services. Clay and Josh along with the other Principals and Leaders of our organization, including our clients, source each member of the studio for their individual and collective Ethos, Curiosity and Drive.

Josh Blumer is a problem solver, mentor, and architect who has been a catalyst and creative force for a transformative, inspirational design process at AB design studio. A long hallway in the main residence links both sides of the home, from remodeled kitchen and living spaces to a new voluminous master suite addition. Honey House reflects the artistic and Zen qualities of the area’s past—a place once inhabited by a collective of bohemian poets, writers, and artists—by maintaining original elements and reusing stone found onsite. Preserving its local heritage, the home also shares the same quarry stone as the nearby 1956-built Buddhist complex, also designed by Riggs.The retreat-like dwelling features expertly detailed, well appointed interiors, including bright rooms with birch-veneered ceilings, custom cabinetry and woodwork, and hand-selected furniture. Client Fulfilment -The PM is responsible for managing the combined expectations of the client, principal owners, principals and the project itself. To make more space, the architecture studio extended one end of the house to hold a primary suite.
Guided by the ethereal beauty of California's coastline, a neutral palette served as the canvas, allowing the innate hues of the surroundings to shine. Earthy tones and soft whites formed the backdrop for a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors. Warm accents—invoking the sun's embrace—punctuated the space, infusing vitality and radiance.
In 2005, what began as a conversation between two architects about making a difference in the world through architecture organically evolved into a lasting partnership. Instantly finding inspiration through collaboration enabled founders Clay Aurell and Josh Blumer to rise above any challenge with each other’s unwavering support.
